Management of Iranian National Copper Industry during imposed war, Mr.MahmoudShiri’s Story

coppersmelting in hard days

When I started my job as the managing director, the company owed 1,200,000,000 toman, but at the end of administration there was about 40 million USD in company.

I started to work in this company in the midst of difficulties, form April 1984 till January 1990. During the hardest days of imposed war  and the most difficult days for copper industries. No one would accept the management of Sarcheshmeh copper complex, but I did. We were indebted to banks and we could not pay back. But we had other problems, 5800 employees have not been paid for months and our debt amount to banks was about 1200 Million Tomans. We had to produce at least 55000 Tons of copper cathode to pay our debts but we faced other problems for production. There was no problem with the production line but the refinery complex was still being completed. The copper furnaces in operation were becoming old and useless. Only 2 of 8 mills were usable. We also had problem with the sedimentation in pipes for transporting water to the mills and only 2 mills could operate and we even did not have enough money to purchase bolts.  We could purchase all equipment with Only 5 millionToman, but at that time there was no enough budget and I borrowed the money from a friend.

When I started my job as  the managing director, the company owed 1,200,000,000 toman, but at the end of administration there was about 40 million USD in company.
